The good people of Otokutu community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State have commended the members of the Conference for the Actualisation of Human Rights (CAHR) for blazing the trail in championing community service in the state.
The community gave the commendation on Monday 26 October, when members of the human rights body, in a rare commitment to rendering community services thoroughly cleared the heaps of burnt tyres and others waste materials that litter the busy Otokutu junction during the SARS protesters.
The burnt tyres and other waste materials at the Otokotu junction were seriously obstructing free flow of traffic after the 2 weeks long EndSARS protest was suspended.
The exercise was headed by the Director General of CAHR Barr. Omemiroro Ogedegbe, State Director of CAHR, Comr. Monday Enudi, and other State executives of CAHR.
Speaking to journalists in the course of the cleaning exercise, the DG of CAHR, Barr. Omemiroro Ogedegbe, said, “the cleaning exercise we are embarking on today is a practical way to put to practice our commitment to render selfless service to humanity and make our society a better place to live in. It is one of the numerous ways we bring to play our corporate social responsibility to our communities. CAHR is committed to promoting culture of cleaniness in our society. In other words, CAHR is an apostle of the popular saying, ‘cleaniness is next to godliness’, and it stands prominently as one of CAHR’s social engagement creeds.”
Continuing, Ogedegbe said that the EndSARS protest was a turning point in Nigeria history, noting that cleaning the Otokotu junction was to ensure the protest ended on a good note. He added that CAHR would always stand strongly in defense of the rights of vulnerable Nigerians and would stop at nothing in advocating for an egalitarian society where rule of law and good governance will not be jeopardized.” He called on corporate organisations, other Civil Society groups, businesses operators and individuals to join hands to make the environment clean in order to promote good health and a serene society.
The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Otokutu junction Vice Chairman, Mr. Godwin Owawa lauded the humanitarian service and commended the executive of CAHR for initiating the novel exercise. He called on well meaning Deltans, and the State government to support the activities of CAHR in the state.
The cleaning exercise lasted couple of hours as the enthusiastic members of CAHR evacuated the wastes littering the road to ease flow of traffic.
