ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, has commended the Delta State Government for the re-awarding of the Asaba International Airport and the Maryam Babangida Way Road in Asaba, which for years has been under construction.
The Council in a communiqué released at the of her Congress held in Asaba, the State capital, said that the action of the government was a bold one, as the steps taking will bring a lasting solution to the deplorable state of the state capital.
“We thank the government for efforts at finding lasting solution to the perennial flood in Asaba through the construction of deep drains and giving priority attention to construction and rehabilitation of major roads in Asaba capital territory.”
The communiqué which was signed by the state Chairman of NUJ, Michael Ikeogwu, and the Secretary, Churchill Oyowe respectively, also raised issues on other national and state matters, all called on those concerned to see that the lives and properties of Nigerians are protected.
Among other issues, the congress called on a proper synergy between the state government, and the security agencies to urgently address the menace of the alleged killings by armed Fulani Herdsmen across the state, in other to forestall the situation degenerating to a full blown crises, while at the same time condemning the attitude of some security agents who wilfully molest Journalists in the course of performing their legitimate duties, as the constitution had allowed.
“As the security agents are Constitutional empowered to do their jobs, that is how Journalists are also backed to carry out their assigned roles, noting rather that both parties should see themselves as partners in progress. They noted.
However, on the issue of the concession agreement between the government, and God is Good Motors, on the state transport company, Delta Line Transport Company, the congress demanded an explanation from the state government on the level the of the agreement, with a view to ascertain how much value has been added since the agreement was signed.
“Congress however implores the Delta State Government to explain the current situation of Delta Line Transport Company since it was concessioned to God Is Good Motors with a view to highlighting how much value has been added to the company.”
