ASABA/Nigeria: Youths under the coalition “Delta Youths Alliance” have distanced themselves from any public demonstrations planned in the state to protest perceived economic hardship in the federation.
In a statement issued in Asaba, youths from Delta Central, Delta South, and Delta North asserted there was no basis for any protest, citing social harmony throughout the state.
Comrade Tega Umokoro, representing Delta Central Youths, Elozino Okoro from Delta South, and Morrison Ossy Okolie of Delta North, condemned the proposed protest as mischievous and unacceptable.
While acknowledging the right to lawful demonstrations, the Delta Youths Alliance stated that the proposed protest had a sinister agenda, being politically motivated by opposition figures seeking to exploit the people for their personal gain.
The youths called for the arrest of anyone found orchestrating such illegal demonstrations and advised all Delta youths to stay off the streets from August 1, 2024, to avoid falling prey to criminal elements posing as protesters against bad governance.
The group urged youth presidents across Delta communities, the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), youth NGOs, and allied youth organizations in the state to be vigilant and educate their members against participating in any demonstrations.
The Delta Youths Alliance expressed their loyalty and support for the state government under the administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, praising the diverse programs and policies dedicated to improving the living standards of the people.
Highlighting the government’s initiatives, such as the prompt payment of bursaries for tertiary school students, grants to over 5,000 youthful artisans and entrepreneurs, and the D-CARES program, which increased direct beneficiaries from 36,353 to 110,841, the youths emphasized that “what Delta needed at this time was celebration, not irresponsible protest.”
