Protesting Residents of Eziokpor Road, Obiaruku, Ukwuani LGA, Delta State
OBIARUKU/Nigeria: Today, 6th of May 2019, the residents of Eziokpor Road in Obiaruku Delta State embarked on a peaceful protest to draw the attention of the Delta State Government’s to their abandoned road project which Governor Ifeanyi Okowa personally pledged to commence work on before the 2019 governorship election.
It could be recalled that the governor, during his campaign visit to Obiaruku, the headquarters of Ukwuani Local Government Area, on the 29th of January, 2019 pledged that: “In three days time, bulldozers and working implements will be deployed to Obiaruku to start work on the approved roads and before the elections, we shall commission those projects”.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mr. Chidi Uwabuofu, said that it is shameful that 98 days after the governor made his pledge, there is still no visible work on the road. The people of Eziopkor Road of Obiaruku are eager to know why work has not commenced on the road.
They also wish to know if the road is no longer among those approved by the Delta State government.
They wish to know from the governor if his promise was a mere political statement or a trick used to cajole them into voting for him.
The protesters note that the basic need of the people should not be used to play politics at the expense of the people’s wellbeing.
They further note that as a public elected officer, the governor should know that when he makes a pledge to do something for his constituents, he should know that he is morally obligated to deliver on his promise as a leader.
There is no doubt that Eziokpor road has great socio-economic importance and the residence are calling on the governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, “the roadmaster” to deliver on his promise.
