Warri based nongovernmental organisation (NGO), Envirumental and Rural Mediation Centre (ENVIRUMEDIC), has commended the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Hon. Godwin Adode, for promoting Effective Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Delta State, by providing waste disposal bins in Otovwodo Grammer School, Ughelli, through the school’s E-WASH Club, to ensure proper disposal of wastes in public schools.
ENVIRUMEDIC gave the commendation Tuesday 17 March, at the Council’s Secretariat when the wastes disposal bins were being handed over to the Otovwodo Grammar School E-WASH Club.
This is happening on the heels of a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Council by officials of ENVIRUMEDIC, and Otovwodo Grammar school E-WASH Club, whereby the students outlined the challenges hampering their efforts to promote proper waste disposal in their school.
Describing the development as a welcome initiative, the Programme Coordinator at ENVIRUMEDIC, Mr. Lucky Enegide expressed delight at the Chairman’s rare display of commitment towards promoting E-WASH in Ughelli North, even as he urged him to sustain the tempo.
Continuing, Enegide emphasised importance of E-WASH in promoting basic sanitation in public schools as well as the entire society, noting that poor hygiene causes nearly 90% of all deaths from diarrhoea, mainly in children.
Responding, Hon. Adode, thanked ENVIRUMEDIC for leading a campaign to promote E-WASH in Delta State, even as he promised to create dumpsites in Ughelli North to ensure wastes are properly disposed.
Continuing, Adode said his administration was set to build toilet facilities in public places to promote E-WASH in the communities and towns in Ughelli North LGA.
While presenting the waste disposal bins to the students and members of the E-WASH Club of Otovwodo Grammar School, on behalf of the Chairman of the Council, the Head of Department (HOD), Environment, Mrs. Okoto Josephine, charged the students to put the bins to proper use, noting the importance of effective waste management in preventing the spread of diseases in the society.
The Coordinator of E-WASH and teacher at Otovwodo Grammar School, Ms Evroro Mavis, thanked Hon. Adode for the gesture, even as she promised that the bins would be used for the purpose they were donated.
The President of Otovwodo Grammar School E-WASH Club, Master Ugbosu-Joe Oghenekome, an SS2 student, thanked Hon. Adode for his effort towards promoting basic sanitation in public schools and the society.
It will be recalled that ENVIRUMEDIC has been in the forefront of promoting E-WASH in Delta State under the sponsorship of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and had consistently championed that cause with unassailed commitment. And the setting up of the E-WASH Club at Otovwodo Grammar School by ENVIRUMEDIC is one of the avenues through which it takes the E-WASH campaign to the grassroots in recent the time.
