ASBA/Nigeria: Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, has reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to enacting laws to enhance citizens’ lives across the state. This affirmation came during a meeting with members of the Delta Online Publishers’ Forum (DOPF) at the Assembly complex in Asaba on Wednesday, 25th September 2024.
Guwor emphasised the pivotal role of the Legislature as the cornerstone of democracy, highlighting its responsibility in crafting laws essential for peace, order, and effective governance.
He stated that significant legislative milestones have been achieved under his leadership, with numerous bills passed and promptly signed into law by the Governor. He credited the House Committee on Legislative Compliance, chaired by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo, for ensuring implementation of these statutes.
Addressing contemporary challenges such as housing, transportation, and the rising cost of living, Guwor acknowledged the primary executive oversight in these areas but expressed readiness for collaborative efforts across government branches to tackle these pressing issues.
Praising the Delta Online Publishers’ Forum for its pivotal role in the state’s development, Guwor underscored the media’s critical role in upholding democratic values. He stressed the importance of a transparent relationship between the Assembly and the media to ensure accurate reporting and dispel misinformation.
“We encourage the media to engage directly with the Assembly to promote accurate dissemination of legislative activities and combat the spread of fake news,” Guwor emphasized.
The Speaker assured the DOPF of the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to addressing the needs of Delta residents, acknowledging the media’s role in fostering balanced and transparent coverage of legislative proceedings.
Earlier in the meeting, Emmanuel Enebeli, Chairman of the DOPF, commended Guwor’s dynamic leadership during the first year of the 8th Assembly. He applauded the Assembly’s strides and collaborative efforts with other government bodies in advancing the administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.
Enebeli also acknowledged the Assembly’s efforts in addressing security challenges, particularly the farmer-herder conflicts affecting agricultural communities. However, he called for intensified action, noting ongoing disruptions to farming activities and increased food insecurity in several localities.
Highlighting legislative priorities, Enebeli urged the activation of the Delta State Community Security Agency law to bolster security in rural areas. He also pressed for laws mandating local governments to prioritize effective waste management to mitigate environmental risks posed by improper disposal and blocked drainage systems.
In addressing housing concerns in Asaba, Enebeli advocated for legislative measures to regulate exorbitant rent prices, which burden residents. He emphasized the need for affordable housing solutions to benefit both locals and potential investors. Transportation issues were also raised, with a call for the introduction of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses and tricycles to reduce commuting costs.
Looking ahead, discussions at the meeting touched upon the DOPF’s upcoming Annual Lecture themed “Security Challenges: Finding a Local Implementable Solution,” slated for 20th November 2024. Both parties affirmed their commitment to collaborating towards fostering a safer and more prosperous Delta State.
