ASABA/Nigeria: The Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Tim Owhefere, has expressed confidence in the speedy implementation of the Financial Autonomy law by Governor Okowa once all modalities are met to further deepen the ethos of democracy in the state.

In a chat recently, the lawmaker representing Isoko North constituency, expressed optimism in the prompt execution of the financial autonomy law sought by the Delta State and other state houses of assembly, adding that modalities are underway as the speakers’ conference has met with the National Assembly to garner from their experience.

“You know that our Governor was a Senator” the       Majority Leader said, adding that “he wants to really implement the autonomy like he did mention to us and so the modalities are being worked out”.

According to Hon. Owhefere, the autonomy granted to the legislature is desired to strengthen democracy and good governance, stressing that without independence, the legislature may not be able to contain the excesses of the executive as embedded in the principle of checks and balances.

“As a legislator, I know what autonomy to the legislature means because we interface with the Executive arm of government on a daily basis and for us to be able to do our job, we must have some level of independence; be able to tell the Executive when it is right and when it is wrong. Without autonomy, you are not going to be free to ask those questions.

What the National Assembly tried to do here is to ensure that we are free in the discharge of our duties. So the autonomy granted to the legislature is to strengthen democracy.” he said.

Reacting to his role as the Majority leader, Hon. Owhefere, said that he has been able to ensure sanctity in the House by maintaining cordial relationship with his colleagues and facilitating a smooth interface with the state governor, stressing that based on existing relationship with Governor Okowa which transcends beyond politics,

“For Okowa, we have been close right from the time I came into government. You know he is a very humble man and at every point, he has shown me love and respect even before he became Governor.

I do not think it can be better than this because he is a governor who takes his time and never will request any appointment that he doesn’t grant because he knows that whatever we are going to discuss must be topical” he added.
