WARRI/Nigeria: Regular payments of taxes by citizens have been described as the most sustainable source of revenue for government to meet its obligations.
This position was put forward during a courtesy visit by the President and members of the chartered institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to the management of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue at the Board’s headquarters in Warri.
Receiving the visitors, Chairman of the Board, Sir Monday John Onyeme, represented by the Board Member representing Delta South Senatorial District, Dr Barry Gbe, expressed delight for the visit which he said would afford both sides the opportunity for further co-operation on educating the public about the importance of paying taxes, as well as increasing revenue drive and enforcement activities.
The Board Chairman assured the CITN President of support for the institute in carrying out its activities in Delta State.
In his remarks, leader of the delegation and President, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Chief Cyril Ikemefuna Ede, explained that his visit to Warri was to inaugurate the executive committee of the newly created Warri and District Society of the Institute for which he solicited the support of the Board.
While commencing the Board Chairman for the successes so far recorded in repositioning the State Revenue Board, Chief Ede stated that citizens and taxable entities should be encouraged to imbibe a tax paying culture as, according to him: “taxes remain the most sustainable source of revenue for government to meet its obligations”.
The CITN President re-affirmed the commitment of the institute to an economy that is dependent on taxation revenue, and gave the assurance of the institute’s support towards enhancing the capacity of the Board to increase its revenue performance for the benefit of the generality of Deltans.
