EFFURUN: As Deltans continue to complain over incidents of violation of the rights of the populace by soldiers as enforcement of curfew continues across Delta State, Comrade Monday Enudi, State Director of the Conference for the Actualisation of Human Rights (CAHR), has called on the operatives of the Nigeria Army to be courteous while enforcing the state government’s curfew.
Enudi, gave the advice, Tuesday 27, in Effurun while speaking to journalists about pockets of allegations of rights violation by security operatives enforcing the ongoing curfew in Delta state.
The renowned human rights activist charged security operatives to be civil in the discharge of their duties, stating that under no guise must the fundamental rights of Nigerians be abused.
He called on governor lfeanyi Okowa to adjust the curfew time to 8pm, noting that business activities in the state have seriously been affected by the curfew time which starts at 6pm.
Continuing, Enudi said that an adjustment of the curfew time would be convenient for Deltans as majority of the people depend on small business activities to eke out a living.
Speaking further, Enudi seriously frowned at the ease by which rights of the citizens are often violated by soldiers and other security operatives in the guise of implementing the curfew. He described as unfortunate, the brutalization of a senior medical personnel, Dr. Raphael Onyemekahia by soldiers in Effurun, Uvwie local government area of the state, who were said to be enforcing the state government’s curfew.
It would be recalled that there have been repeated calls by Deltans to governor Ifeanyi Okowa to adjust the curfew time which many have said has adverse effect on businesses across the state.
Soldiers suspected to be attached to the 3 Battalion Nigerian Army, Effurun, Delta State, on Saturday allegedly brutalised a medical doctor and ordered him to swim and bathe inside a gutter full of dirty water.
The soldiers, who were said to be enforcing the state government’s curfew, SaharaReporters gathered, confronted the medical doctor, Raphael Onyemekehia, a consultant physician, at Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state,
