ASABA: Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North at the National Assembly, clarified on Monday that he is not seeking the governorship of the proposed Anioma State. His primary focus, he asserted, is on the creation of the state itself.
Addressing a gathering of Ndokwa leaders, youths, and women at the Asaba residence of PDP stalwart Chief Godswill Obieluem, Senator Nwoko, who sponsors the Anioma State creation bill in the Senate, emphasized his commitment to this cause.
“My eyes are firmly on the creation of Anioma State and nothing more,” Nwoko stated. He added that the determination of which geographical zone Anioma would belong to should be guided by democratic norms and public affirmation.
Senator Nwoko highlighted that the agitation for Anioma State has persisted for 50 years, making it Nigeria’s oldest state creation movement. He argued that the time has come to achieve this goal for the sake of equity.
“The current government is resolved to create a new state, and Anioma stands a golden chance,” he said. “I want Anioma, yes, but I am not aspiring to be Governor of Anioma. My focus is to witness the birth of Anioma. From my interactions with our people, we want Anioma.”
He outlined the benefits of Anioma State, including new opportunities, a full-fledged government with offices, elective positions, and political appointments. He also pointed to the development of social infrastructure that would come closer to the people’s doorsteps.
“We must all support the creation of Anioma State. Our forebears championed Anioma. We have a collective duty to make Anioma a reality this time,” he urged.
Senator Nwoko also briefed the meeting on his legislative efforts, noting his role in ensuring government attention to key projects in Delta North such as Okpai electricity, Oko road, and the Ogwashi Uku dam.
He assured that more amenities for Delta North would be embedded in subsequent budgets for implementation, and expressed gratitude to the people of Delta North for their continued support. Nwoko committed to standing as a responsive ambassador for his constituents.
After the meeting, Senator Nwoko signed a condolence register in honor of Chief Obieluem’s mother, who passed away a few weeks ago.
