WARRI/Nigeria: The importance of women in the society had been stressed, and they had been advised to take their rightful place in the affairs of the society as their contribution is as important as that of the men.
This was the conclusion of a recent workshop held in Warri for women by Environmental and Rural Mediation Centre, (ENIRUMEDIC) Warri and sponsored by ActionAid Nigeria, for women tagged “Peer Education for Women Facilitators”.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of ENVIRUMEDIC, Chief Monday Itoghor, said the programme was organised for women facilitators who after their training will go back to their areas to train other women to understand their rights in the society.
Chief Itoghor stated further that one area the women will equally benefit from the training was the added exposure on how they will use what they will learn to better their immediate family.
He called on women to stand up for their right, especially on things that affects them directly, and put them in disadvantage positions.
“Today we had received reports on many right violations, divorce cases, violent against women and others, this training is to educate them on their right and how to seek for it”.
“Research has shown that women are more venerable to a lot of dangers, especially rape, discrimination and exclusion, if these women know their right, and the men know their rights, the women can negotiate, thus avoiding violent that normally emanates from some decisions taking which many a time are against the right of women”.
The representatives of ActionAid Nigeria, Mrs Nkechi Ilochi and Mrs Tasallah Chibok said ActionAid Nigeria is interested in women rights, and the approach to getting the needed rights by women is trough informal and formal educations.
The women who participated in the training were twenty, who were selected from different communities in the state.
